Today (18) marked the closing of the first cycle of youth meetings under Brasil’s BRICS Presidency. In addition to the agreement among the countries regarding the axes proposed by the national coordination, there was an important announcement: the date for the BRICS Youth Summit, which will occur on June 9-10 in Brasilia, Federal District, around one month prior to the Leaders Summit in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

"The dynamics in which we work with youth themes is that, beyond diplomacy, real integration must happen among societies"

Strengthening the Youth Summit as a key forum for young people from the Global South is one of the priorities for the year that marks one decade since the formalization of youth debates in the cooperation group’s agenda. Among the strategies to promote these themes, the young population will be invited to take part in the process through state meetings. During Brasil’s G20 Presidency last year, the Youth 20 had great success with similar dynamics, through Regional Dialogs.

“We will have regional meetings to discuss the themes and we incentivize other countries to do the same so that in June we can have an effervescent production by the youth from Brasil and other member countries, allowing us to reach a report, a  robust final declaration that can contribute to the objectives presented by Brasil,” stated Ronald Sorriso, National Youth Secretary, recalling the successful experience of civil society participation at the G20 Social last year, under the coordination of the Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic (Secretaria-Geral da Presidência da República /SGPR), Márcio Macedo.

Incorporating issues pertaining the youth in the discussions about development, industrialization, sustainability, and global governance; advancing proposals for joint financing for youth policies; expand the exchange of best practices and increase social participation in discussions related to the youth at the BRICS are also highlighted themes in the Brazilian agenda.

On the meeting, the National Secretary underscored the congruence of participants by cooperation agendas. “We had a very fruitful meeting with the participation of basically all countries, who were able to bring their contributions, inaugurating this space which, beyond the technical meeting, is the BRICS Youth Council, which will gather representatives from the government, youth authorities, and civil society to exchange common objectives among the countries and advance in terms of real integration. The dynamics in which we work with youth themes is that, beyond diplomacy, real integration must happen among societies,” he stated.

Youth participation at the BRICS happens through technical meetings, the ministerial meeting, and the work at the Youth Council, established in 2023 under the South African Presidency. At the Council, the themes are disposed as follows among the countries that compose the acronym: Health and Sports (Brasil); Education, Science, and Training (Russia); Youth Entrepreneurship (India); Science, Technology, and Innovation (China); Social Service and Volunteering (South Africa).

The Council is coordinated by the National Youth Secretariat (Secretaria Nacional de Juventude /SNJ) of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic (Secretaria-Geral da Presidência da República /SGPR), together with the National Youth Council (Conselho Nacional de Juventude /CONJUVE). The Council President, Bruna Brelaz, accompanied the meetings held this Monday (17) and Tuesday (18).
