PRESS RELEASE

Brazilian Congress begins media accreditation for the 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum

Brasil’s Chamber of Deputies and Federal Senate are beginning accreditation of Brazilian and foreign media to cover the 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum, which will take place on June 3-5 at the National Congress Palace in Brasília.

The forum will bring together presidents of parliament and congress representatives from the eleven BRICS member countries — Brasil, Russia, India, China, South Africa,, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates — and two of the nine partner countries — Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. The presidents of the New Development Bank (NDB) and the Inter Parliamentary Union (IUP) were also invited.

Required documents:

  • Identification document with photo (with full name, CPF and mother's name); for foreigners, the passport.
  • Official letter from the media outlet, signed by the responsible party, on letterhead, specifically naming the media professional for the event.
  • Current photo, front facing, against a white background.

The event will discuss “The Role of BRICS Parliaments in Building a More Inclusive and Sustainable Global Governance”. The Meeting of BRICS Women Parliamentarians and the Meeting of the Chairmen of the Foreign Affairs Committees of the bloc's Parliaments will both be held on the first day. The formal opening session will be on June 4 at 10:30 am. At the end of the 11th Parliamentary Forum, a final document is expected to be adopted by consensus and forwarded to the bloc's Leaders Summit, which will take place in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7, 2025.

The objectives of the forum include strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation among the bloc's countries on topics such as health, new technologies, the environment, trade, and investment; exchange in science, technology and innovation; technology transfer for innovative solutions; reducing external dependencies in strategic areas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and renewable energy; and promoting a more inclusive and participatory BRICS, especially in relation to parliaments, civil society, and women.

History

Brasil assumed the presidency of BRICS on January 1, 2025. On June 4 and 5, the working sessions of the Parliamentary Forum will address the Brazilian presidency’s six priority topics: cooperation in global health; trade, investment, and finance; climate change; governance of artificial intelligence; multilateral architecture towards peace and security; and institutional development of the bloc.

Since its first meeting in Moscow in 2015, the BRICS Parliamentary Forum has consolidated itself as a mechanism for strengthening inter-parliamentary dialog and cooperation among member countries.

In the face of the challenges of the global scenario — such as advancing protectionist policies and weakened multilateralism — the forum seeks to strengthen the parliamentary proposal for solutions to issues that permeate the world order and directly affect the bloc’s countries.

BRICS: economy and population

With the inclusion of more countries from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, BRICS currently represents 48.5% of the world's population and a 39% share of the global economy. Data from the International Monetary Fund indicate that, in 2024, all the bloc’s countries showed positive economic growth, up from 1.1% to 6.1%.

In foreign trade, the countries in the group account for 24% of total global trade. Brasil's trade with BRICS added up to USD 210 billion in 2024. The bloc accounted for 36% of Brasil's exports and 34% of imports in 2024.
