BRICS Public Prosecutors’ Offices Meeting - 7th Meeting of BRICS Countries' Prosecutors General
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office of Brasil (Ministério Público Federal/MPF) is promoting the 7th Meeting of BRICS Countries' Prosecutors General, to be held on September 16. The online event will gather heads of Public Prosecutors Offices from all countries integrating the economic bloc, to discuss strategies for joint actions to combat transnational crime.
The goal of the annual meeting, held since 2016, is to strengthen legal cooperation to disrupt international criminal organizations and provide more effective responses to societal concerns in cases of corruption, drug and human trafficking, financial and environmental crimes, among others. This year, Brasil will host the event, and the discussions will focus on the theme: Artificial Intelligence and Justice: Strategies for Legal Security, Ethics, and International Cooperation.
In today's globalized world, technological tools and artificial intelligence are increasingly used for criminal activities. Therefore, a coordinated effort among countries is necessary to curb this advance, ensure criminals are held accountable, and protect victims. On another front, the exchange of experiences and best practices also enables these technologies to be used to improve investigations conducted by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in combating various types of irregularities.
In this year’s meeting, the Prosecutors General will also discuss measures to strengthen legal cooperation for the recovery of funds diverted by organized crime. According to data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), 2% to 5% of global GDP consists of illicit capital. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) estimates that less than 1% of these funds has been recovered.
The meeting of the Prosecutors General’s Offices will be held in the context of Brasil’s BRICS presidency. The bloc comprises countries that are home to around half of the world's population and account for 39% of global GDP. The group aims to promote a more equitable, just, democratic, and balanced world order. BRICS consists of 11 countries: Brasil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates.
Priorities
In 2025, Brasil’s MPF will host the meeting, which will focus on the following areas of work:

Developing shared mechanisms for asset recovery—meaning the return of funds derived from criminal activities that are held abroad to their country of origin;
