Ceiba pentandra

Visual identity of BRICS Brazil

The logo’s colors refer to member countries’ flags, and a giant Amazon rainforest tree inspired it: the Brazilian presidency has presented the graphic design for BRICS 2025, to be held in Brasil 15 years after the forum's first summit in the country.

“Guardian of the forest”, “mother of trees”, “stairway to heaven”. These are some popular ways of referring to the samaúma (Ceiba pentandra, or kapok) tree, which can stand 60 meters tall and span two meters in diameter — an Amazon giant. Among other things, the visual proposal conveys the diplomatic, socioeconomic and political grandeur of BRICS, and the tree inspired the logo of the Brazilian presidency of the forum in 2025.

Ceiba pentandra, the tree of the 17th BRICS Summit

It is impossible to think of Brazil without thinking of the Amazon — and the samaúma, deeply respected by the rainforest’s indigenous communities, carries meanings that align with the core values of BRICS. While the tree's open and horizontal crown, which protects other species of flora, symbolizes protection and inclusion, the sapopemas — the vigorous and visible roots that support the tree — symbolize the strength of the union between the parties.

The samaúma's ability to extract water from deep within the soil, even during droughts, and to share it with other plants, symbolizes cooperation and shared development. The sapopemas are also used for communication within the rainforest. These structures, alongside the quantity of water that is accumulated in the trunk, if struck, make a sound that echoes over long distances, evoking the idea of connection and dialogue.

Earlier this year, President Lula planted two Samaúma saplings on the grounds of his official residence — the Alvorada Palace —, highlighting the height they can reach. “I want people who come to Brasília [the city that will host the BRICS meetings] to learn a little more about Brasil,” he said at the time.

A plural identity

After hosting the G20, and 15 years after the first BRICS summit in Brasil, the only country in the Americas to be a member of the group will resume leadership of BRICS in 2025 — a year that marks the expansion of member countries and its opening to partner countries. Thus, the inspiration in Ceiba pentandra also communicates this diversity, since it can be found in other countries in the Americas and West Africa.
