Reporter: In a 28-paragraph document, the Energy Ministers of the BRICS member countries approved a Joint Statement reaffirming their commitment to just, orderly, and inclusive energy transitions. The document highlights the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in alignment with the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals, while respecting national circumstances and priorities. Bolivia and Cuba, as partner countries, were also represented at the ministerial meeting held at the Itamaraty Palace, in Brasilia.

The National Secretary for Energy Transition and Planning at the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Thiago Barral, emphasized that without adequate investment, the transition will be slower, less equitable, and less inclusive.

Thiago Barral: The energy agenda clearly intersects with climate change and decarbonization, because globally energy accounts for a significant share of greenhouse gas emissions. The main message is that this effort toward energy transition and decarbonization must include the financing needs, which are still far from what the world requires.

Reporter: In this regard, Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago, President of COP30, who attended the meeting with ministers from the Global South, stressed the importance of addressing this issue from a multilateral perspective that involves collaboration and cooperation among various countries to achieve common goals.

André Corrêa do Lago: Strengthening coordination among the various international forums held in Brasil — such as the G20, BRICS, and meetings with Amazon countries — is essential, as the energy issue is absolutely strategic. Therefore, at COP30, we will see several initiatives that are also closely related to the energy agenda.

Reporter: Next month, on June 9 and 10, Brasilia will host the seventh BRICS Youth Energy Summit. Participants will meet with Brazilian policymakers and energy leaders to discuss recommendations for the BRICS Youth Energy Report 2025, which should include topics aligned with the UN Conference.
