The BRICS political negotiators, often referred to as “sherpas,” are gathering in Brasília on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th December for their final meeting before the end of the Brazilian presidency. During the two-day event, representatives from the eleven member nations will review the year's achievements. Following this, Brasil will formally hand over the group's leadership to India.

The first day of the 4th Sherpas Meeting will focus on presenting the results of the key priorities defined by Brasil for the year. These priorities were concentrated across six crucial areas: Global Health Cooperation; Climate Change; Trade, Investment, and Finance; Multilateral Architecture for Peace and Security; Governance of Artificial Intelligence; and Institutional Development.

Significant successes of Brasil’s BRICS presidency include three key declarations endorsed by the leaders from the Global South at the summit held in Rio de Janeiro in July. These declarations are the BRICS Leaders’ Declaration on the Global Governance of Artificial Intelligence, the BRICS Leaders’ Framework Declaration on Climate Financing, and the BRICS Partnership for the Elimination of Socially Determined Diseases (SDDs).

The BRICS Leaders’ Declaration also reiterated the group's strong commitment to multilateralism and advocated for a more inclusive global governance system and reform of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Brasil's delegation includes the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, and Ambassador Mauricio Lyrio, Brasil's Sherpa.

Transition to India’s Leadership

The meeting's second day will feature the formal ceremony during which Brasil will pass the BRICS presidency to India. This crucial moment will also include a presentation outlining the priorities and agenda of the upcoming Indian administration for the bloc.
