IBGE coordinates first technical meeting of BRICS National Statistics Institutes
On February 17-18, IBGE coordinated the BRICS NSI meeting to prepare the Joint Statistical Publication 2025, discussing indicators and data for the Heads of State Summit.

The Brazilian Institute of Geographic and Statistics - IBGE coordinated this Monday and Tuesday, February 17 and 18, the 17th meeting of National Statistic Institutes (NSIs) from BRICS countries. The Institute coordinated the online meeting that integrates the agenda of activities of the Brazilian presidency of the group, which aimed to prepare this year’s edition of the Joint Statistical Publication (JSP) for the Heads of State Summit, to be held in Brasil on July 6 and 7, 2025.
This first session addressed technical aspects of the Joint Statistical Publication. Created in 2010, and with 14 editions to date, the JSP contains an opening chapter presenting general information with comparable statistics for member states, and 14 thematic chapters, each one containing a summary chart contemplating all countries, followed by specific charts from each country. Furthermore, the JSP presents a set of appendices that provide a general overview of the BRICS statistical systems, as well as a set of annexes about the current state of the monitoring structure for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
IBGE also coordinates the production of JSP Snapshot, a summarized version, without the annexes, of the main charts contained in the fifteen chapters: General Information, Economic and Social Indicators Comparison of BRICS Countries; Population; Labor Force; National Accounts; Price Indices; People’s Living Standard; Resources and Environment; Industry; Energy; Agriculture, Forestry, Animal Husbandry and Fishery; Transport; Information and Communication Technology; Finance; External Economic Relations; and Tourism.
IBGE Director details planning for 2025 publications
Vladimir Gonçalves Miranda, Deputy Director at IBGE’s Research Directorate, explained that the meeting covered everything from the purpose that will guide the publications to the inputs necessary for their execution. “We discussed the scope of the two publications we will have in 2025 and the inputs required to make them. We presented the graphic design proposals elaborated by IBGE, responsible for coordinating the publication, and we also evaluated the activity schedule for the countries to receive the information and make them available to IBGE. These data will be analyzed and compiled for the final publication,” stated Miranda.
On the second day of the meeting, focus was on the definition of the indicators that will integrate the two versions. “We had a deeper discussion about the indicators that will compose the two publications, the extended one and the summary,” added the deputy director. Responsible for coordinating the project, IBGE will now continue with the analysis and compilation of the data provided by the participating countries, with the goal of ensuring the quality and precision of the information that will be publicized.
Participants at the meeting included representatives from the National Statistical Institute of China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, and South Africa, in addition to Brasil.
