BRICS discusses impacts of AI and climate change on the labor market during Employment WG meeting

Virtual meeting led by Brasil promotes international cooperation to address technological and environmental challenges, with focus on decent work and fair transition.

The BRICS Employment Working Group (EWG) will have its 2nd preparatory meeting on February 27 and 28, under the Brazilian Presidency. The virtual session will be transmitted from the SERPRO headquarters in Brasilia (Federal District). It will gather representatives from the member countries – Brasil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – as well as new members: Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

The event will continue the discussions initiated in mid-February during the opening session led by Brasil’s Minister of Labor and Employment, Luiz Marinho. Discussions will focus on the impacts of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the labor market and on the urgency of social protection policies in the face of technological and climate transformations.

The program includes four thematic panels focused on the impacts of climate change on labor and the challenges of a fair transition. The debates will approach strategies to adapt the world of labor to environmental changes, promote decent jobs, strengthen social dialog, and integrate health and occupational safety into public policies. With the participation of experts, government representatives, and social partners, the meeting aims to promote international cooperation and bolster sustainable solutions for the future of work. Under the theme "Strengthening Global South Cooperation for a More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance", the Brazilian BRICS Presidency seeks to promote a more equitable global development based on economic and social cooperation among emerging countries.
